Composition teacher since 2001 at the Faculté de musique de l’Université de Montréal, Denis Gougeon is among the most active composers in Canada. He has more than ninety works to his credit, ranging from solo to orchestral works, from concert music to chamber opera, from musical tales to works for the ballet. Gougeon’s great flexibility led him to produce music for 10 shows staged by the avant-garde Théâtre UBU of Montréal.
Among his recent works, let mention Mutation which will be presented by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, on April, 20th, 2011. He received in 2000 the Composer of the year Prix Opus, from the Conseil québécois de la musique; the Jan V. Matejcek Award by the SOCAN in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007; the Juno Prize in 2007 for the best Classical Composition of the year for Clere Vénus; and in May 2010, the International Grand Prize Shanghaï Festival Présences Competition for Toy (Music Box).
